GetSomeJoy and Oakland Black Pride are joining forces to prioritize mental health during the 3rd annual Black Pride Festival, which welcomes family, friends and allies to celebrate Oakland’s LGBTQ+ communities. It’s a party! The week-long roster of joy-infused activities and celebrations are guided by this year’s theme, “Celebrate the Magic of We,” a testament to our collective power, brilliance, and beauty.
Our community has been disproportionately impacted by the effects of grief and loss. As Oakland Pride’s mental health partner, we’re collaborating to offer accessible wellness experiences and resources that center joy, facilitate healing, and foster connection in raggedy times. Come through to say HEY, share a recipe, or grab some community wellness resources.
Here’s how we’re making Black queer magic this summer. And how you can help.

How can we use creative community building, mindfulness, music, and food to cope, thrive, and find joy in raggedy times? As Black, queer folks, what joyful memories and traditions sustain, encourage, and anchor us amidst destabilizing transitions?
During this interactive experience offered through partnership with creative wellness agency GetSomeJoy and Oakland Black Pride, participants will use writing to explore love and loss. Through grounding activities, reflection, introspective writing, and group discussion in a safe, affirming environment, we unpack emotions related to grief and mourning and collaborate on tools and strategies for moving through spiritual ashiness. Attendees receive local + digital wellness resources derived from an Oakland Black Pride Edition of GetSomeJoy’s “griefkit: Crowdsourced tools and considerations for raggedy times" via GetSomeJoy's Joy Report Newsletter.
Saturday, July 1. 12pm-6pm PST.
Join us for a day of fun, fellowship, and resource sharing during Oakland Pride’s community fair and celebration. Share what joy means to you on our Community Literary Therapy Wall, grab some fried chicken stickers and a copy of our resource-packed griefkit, and find tools for spreading joy at home, school, work, and beyond.
